American Airlines is upgrading its narrowbody fleet with more premium seating and seatback entertainment screens at every seat.
“We’re making one of the most significant investments in the onboard experience in our history,” said American’s Chief Customer Officer Heather Garboden in a press statement. “From next-generation seatback entertainment at every seat to substantially more premium seating options, these enhancements will give our customers more ways to relax, stay connected and enjoy their journey.”
More Premium Seating
American plans to increase premium seating from about 25 percent of seats on narrowbody departures today to approximately 40 percent in the coming years.
The airline is already retrofitting its Airbus A319 and A320 aircraft to add a row of First Class seats. Upcoming Boeing 737 MAX 10 deliveries will feature 24 First Class seats, while American’s A321neo fleet will also be reconfigured with additional First Class seating.
The airline is also expanding Main Cabin Extra across most of its narrowbody fleet. The seats offer extra legroom, earlier boarding, dedicated overhead bin space and a complimentary beverage.
New and retrofitted aircraft will also feature redesigned seats, additional storage and enhanced lighting.
Seatback Screens Coming to Every Seat
Starting in 2028, all new Airbus and Boeing narrowbody aircraft deliveries will feature seatback entertainment screens at every seat, while American will also retrofit existing aircraft. The airline expects the installation to be completed across its fleet by the early 2030s.
The new system will feature large-format 4K displays, expanded entertainment options, personalized movie and TV recommendations, enhanced flight maps, USB-C charging and Bluetooth connectivity. American says the experience will also work with its high-speed Starlink connectivity.
