Virgin Voyages has introduced a new Crew member, but this one is digital. Announced at Google Cloud Next in Las Vegas, Rovey is the cruise line’s first AI Crew assistant and the initial expression of a broader artificial intelligence effort with Google Cloud called Project Ruby.
“We sail to more than 150 destinations, with 60+ itineraries on sale more than two years out. It’s a complex decision, and it matters,” said Nirmal Saverimuttu, CEO of Virgin Voyages, in a press statement. “Our advisors care about getting it right for their clients. Rovey helps with that. It brings the most relevant options into focus and makes it easier to tailor recommendations for clients. That’s always our goal with AI: to free up processes in favor of human-to-human connections.”
Rovey Helps Virgin First Mates Firsthand
Rovey is designed to navigate one of travel’s more complex purchase decisions: planning a Virgin voyage. Anyone who has worked through the brand’s itineraries, cabin categories, Shore Things and booking options knows how many variables come into play before a client ever steps on board. With Rovey, that groundwork becomes faster and more precise, helping streamline early planning and freeing up time for what matters most during final sale conversations.
“The best First Mates we work with spend their time building relationships, not answering the same foundational questions every week,” added Nathan Rosenberg, Chief Brand Experience, Marketing and Momentum Officer, in the press statement. “When a Sailor arrives having already worked through the basics, the conversation becomes about the person and less about the itinerary. That is where trust is built. That is what drives a Sailor to rebook and to send their friends. Rovey shows up first so the First Mate can finish strongest.”
Built on the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform with Gemini models and BigQuery, Rovey uses real-time data and predictive modeling to deliver personalized recommendations based on travel style and timing. It interprets the intersection of destination, itinerary length, ship experience and onboard offerings to give users customized options that align with what they value most. Previously, similar details might have required contacting Sailor Services for clarification or comparison—now it can all be done within moments.
Developed jointly by Virgin Voyages and Google Cloud, Rovey operates as a decision-support system that combines structured data with behavioral insights drawn from years of cruise booking experience. Virgin Voyages provided the domain expertise, while Google Cloud contributed the AI infrastructure and model training. Sam Sebastian, vice president for North America Regions at Google Cloud, said the collaboration helps reduce booking friction and create more relevant travel recommendations at scale.
Rovey represents the first of seven planned AI-driven tools under Project Ruby, a multi-year initiative focused on enhancing every stage of the Sailor journey. More resources will launch over time to further support those shaping the traveler experience, from the first consideration of a voyage through rebooking after a successful sailing.
