Brevard County is stretching its Fourth of July programming across nearly a week this year, tying the usual holiday lineup to the country’s 250th anniversary.

More results...

  • Cocoa Beach opens the run on July 3 with an America’s 250 celebration at Centennial Square, closing with a synchronized drone show at 9 p.m. Carnival games, live music from Tidal Theory and a kid zone fill out the evening.
  • On July 4, the Brevard Symphony Orchestra performs its free Symphony Under the Stars concert at Cocoa Riverfront Park, followed by fireworks over the Indian River at 9:15 p.m.
  • Port Canaveral’s July 3 fireworks show can be viewed from the Exploration Tower, which is positioned directly above the waterline.
  • Titusville runs its America250 Semiquincentennial Parade down U.S. Route 1 on July 4, followed by Red, White and Boom fireworks at Sand Point Park at 9:15 p.m. The Valiant Air Command Warbird Museum opens the cockpits of nine historic aircraft that same day, with docents stationed at each one.
  • Melbourne holds its Independence Day parade the morning of July 4, capped by the MelBOOM fireworks celebration at Front Street Park that night.
  • Titusville Playhouse keeps its production of “1776” on stage through July 12, covering the full holiday week.

The strongest pull is the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, where the All-American Block Party runs July 3 through 5 with daily DJ sets in NASA Central from noon to 4 p.m., hula hoop contests, robotics demonstrations from the Pink Team and interactive programming inside Space Shuttle Atlantis.

Charleston, SC: The Mills House

With the country’s 250th anniversary approaching, interest is building in hotels that carry a direct link to that history rather than a themed weekend built around it.

The Mills House in Charleston opened in 1853, built by local businessman Otis Mills. Its early guest list included Joseph Rainey, one of the most influential freedmen in Charleston and the first African American to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives, and Professor Jerry Thomas, widely credited as the father of the modern cocktail, who tended bar at the hotel’s original Best Friends Lounge.

This summer’s programming includes:

  • Stay, Savor & Celebrate 250 package: From June 28 through Sept. 4, guests booking this package receive a $250 food-and-beverage credit, valid at Iron Rose, the rooftop Terrace Bar and Black Door Cafe.
  • America250 weekday rates: Rooms are priced at $250 a night Sunday through Thursday over the same date range.
  • $17.76 cocktails: Iron Rose is running a cocktail menu built around Thomas’s recipes, including The Best Friend Flip, made with cognac, egg, cane sugar and aromatic bitters and drawn from a 17th-century tavern drink. The name nods to the hotel’s former Best Friends Lounge.
