This year’s ExploreGB event, a travel trade show hosted by VisitBritain, was held in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, also known simple as Newcastle. The city is located about 3.5 hours from London and a little over 1.5 hours from Edinburgh by train, making it a perfect spot for a day trip. The locals refer to themselves and those from the surrounding areas as Geordies; that’s also a reference to the Northern English dialect spoken by the locals. The city is booming in digital technology, retail, tourism, art, music, sports and cultural centers.
Just a few blocks from central station is the Pink Lane, which was like the red light district in Victorian times. Currently, it’s a big party area on the weekends, as locals and travelers often celebrate “stag nights,” bachelor/bachelorette parties around town as there are two universities and a medical school nearby, attracting a younger crowd (the average age in Newcastle is about 35). It is said to have one of the best nightlifes in all of Britain.
