Finniss River Lodge, a six-suite luxury lodge located on a working cattle ranch in Australia’s Northern Territory, welcomed its first guests this week.

The lodge is a 25-minute charter flight or 90-minute drive from the Territory’s capital city of Darwin. Rooms feature natural timbers and floor to ceiling windows; Finniss River Lodge touts the style as ‘bush character meets contemporary elegance.’

A maximum of 12 guests can dine on all-inclusive, locally inspired cuisine. Guests also can relax in an infinity-edge pool with expansive views.

Activities and tours are a big part of Finniss River Lodge’s appeal. For example, guided activities, tailored to both adults and children, include:

  • hunting and gathering nightly dinner ingredients
  • learning bush survival skills
  • airboat rides
  • barramundi fishing
  • experiencing indigenous culture in nearby Litchfield National Park

‘Cows & Canapes,’ a signature experience at the lodge, pairs drinks and light bites and a visit with cattle station workers and, of course, the resident Brahman cattle.

“Our service is real and genuine, combining 5-star style with country hospitality,” said Matthew Hurley, the resort’s director of operations, in a press release. “Our guests will get to meet personalities both from the working station and the local area. From a nature-seekers perspective, Finniss River Lodge supports a plethora of wildlife — flocks of magpie geese and brolgas in their thousands, native and introduced species as well as the iconic saltwater crocodile. There is no doubt that Finniss River Lodge will be a birdwatcher’s paradise and for camera enthusiasts, the photogenic early morning mists, spectacular sunsets and natural fauna will be out of this world.”

Rates start at AUS $1,200 (US $857) per person per night.
