Aurora Expeditions’ newest vessel, the Douglas Mawson, has successfully completed sea trials. Named after the renowned Australian geologist and explorer, this purpose-built ship will join Aurora’s fleet of small expedition vessels.
“Sea trials are one of the most important steps in bringing a ship to life,” said Michael Heath, CEO of Aurora Expeditions, in a press statement. “We’re thrilled with the results and can’t wait to welcome our expeditioners aboard Douglas Mawson for her inaugural voyages later this year.”

From June 26 to July 2, 2025, the Douglas Mawson underwent rigorous testing of its key systems, including propulsion, navigation and safety features. The trials confirmed the ship’s readiness to navigate some of the world’s most strenuous environments, from Antarctica to the rugged coastlines of Tasmania.
Scheduled for delivery in September 2025, the Douglas Mawson is set to begin its inaugural voyage in December. The ship’s maiden journey will explore Tasmania’s coast, followed by Mawson’s Antarctica expedition, tracing the path of its namesake. Of note: The 2025/26 Antarctic season will feature the rarely offered Epic Antarctica: Crossing the 7th Continent voyage.
The Douglas Mawson accommodates a maximum of 130 passengers for polar expeditions and 154 for small ship cruises. The vessel features state-of-the-art amenities, including a lecture theater, science center, heated outdoor pool, multiple dining venues and dedicated mudroom facilities.
This is the seventh and final Infinity Class vessel built by SunStone Maritime Group and incorporates the latest in responsible ship design. The distinctive Ulstein X-BOW and a range of sustainable features maximize efficiency and minimize environmental impact.
Beyond polar regions, Aurora’s small ships explore cultural destinations such as the Mediterranean, Scotland, Ireland and Latin America.
The Douglas Mawson joins Aurora’s existing Infinity Class vessels, the Greg Mortimer (built in 2019) and the Sylvia Earle (built in 2022).
