Mexico Rides Wave of Cruise Tourism Growth

Mexico welcomed 5.6 million cruise passengers between January and June 2025, marking an 8.4 percent increase over the same period in 2024, according to the country’s Secretary of Tourism, Josefina Rodríguez Zamora.

The growth in cruise arrivals was fueled by 1,639 cruise ship landings at Mexican ports during the first half of the year—a 7.8 percent increase year-over-year, based on data released by the Mexican Navy.

“These figures confirm that Mexico continues to consolidate its position as one of the world’s most attractive cruise destinations,” Rodríguez said, in a media statement. “The strengthening of the National Port System, through investment announced by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, along with coordinated efforts at all levels of government, will translate this growth into economic development and well-being for port communities across the country.”

Top Cruise Ports in Mexico

The busiest Mexican cruise ports during the first half of 2025 were:

  • Cozumel, Quintana Roo – 685 ship arrivals and 2.4 million passengers
  • Mahahual, Quintana Roo – 302 arrivals and 1.2 million passengers
  • Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur – 134 ships and 480,198 passengers

Other busy ports include Ensenada, Baja California, and Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco. These ports continue to be major entry points for international cruise lines operating in the Caribbean and Pacific regions, playing a vital role in Mexico’s tourism economy.

Cruise Tourism Boosting Local Economies

Officials say cruise tourism remains a key contributor to Mexico’s coastal communities, bringing visitor spending, job creation and infrastructure investment. With projections pointing toward continued growth in the second half of 2025, Mexico is expected to further solidify its role as a leading cruise destination in the Americas.
