Banyan Tree Debuts First European Resort in Montenegro

Banyan Group has officially launched its first European resort under the Banyan Tree brand with the opening of Mamula Island by Banyan Tree in Montenegro.

Located on a private island at the entrance to the UNESCO-listed Bay of Kotor, the 32-room resort occupies a restored 19th-century fortress overlooking the Adriatic Sea. The property enters its first full season as a Banyan Tree resort following an extensive restoration that preserved the site’s historic architecture while introducing the brand’s signature wellness and hospitality experiences.

A Historic Fortress Reimagined

Originally built in the 1850s as a coastal fortress, the landmark underwent a seven-year restoration led by developer Samih Sawiris in collaboration with architects, conservation specialists and local heritage authorities. The redesign blends original stonework with contemporary interiors featuring natural materials and handcrafted furnishings inspired by Montenegrin artisans.

Every guestroom and suite offers views of the Adriatic. Heritage Suites retain many of the fortress’s original architectural features, while newly constructed accommodations feature floor-to-ceiling windows and private terraces. Guests arrive via private boat transfer across the Bay of Kotor or by helicopter from Dubrovnik or Tivat.

Wellness, Dining and Local Experiences

The resort’s culinary program highlights regional ingredients and Adriatic seafood across four venues. Parasol focuses on seafood-driven cuisine, Kamena showcases locally sourced produce overlooking the sea, Celeste serves Mediterranean-inspired dishes in an outdoor setting and Pinea Bar offers cocktails and evening entertainment.

Mamula Island also introduces Banyan Tree Spa to Europe. Set within one of the fortress towers, the wellness facility offers traditional Asian therapies alongside hydrotherapy, saunas, a flotation chamber and treatments incorporating local botanicals.

Beyond the resort, guests can explore Montenegro’s coastline by kayak, paddleboard, water bike and e-bike or join curated excursions to destinations including Kotor Old Town, the Blue Cave, Skadar Lake and Lovćen National Park. An Artists-in-Residence program, live performances and cultural workshops further connect visitors with the region’s creative community.
