Pavlus Travel & Cruise says the “typical” river cruise client picture—65 and older, much older—is now incomplete. Gen X and millennial travelers are now inquiring, along with families, and the agency credits the lines’ technology upgrades, including Starlink, with widening the appeal.
Pavlus: Intimate and Luxurious for the Win
Younger callers are only part of the shift. Pavlus says longtime big-ship ocean cruisers and people who have never cruised are increasingly booking river sailings with the agency’s personal travel planners. “People are enticed by the thought of a more intimate, personalized cruise experience with luxury touches and without the crowds,” said Craig S. Pavlus, Founder and CEO, in a press statement.
What those clients expect on board has changed, too. Pavlus says its luxury clients increasingly want hands-on time with local people, food and traditions, such as cooking crepes alongside a chef at a Michelin-starred restaurant. The agency also reports a stronger push to stay active while traveling; many vessels keep bikes and e-bikes aboard.
Supply is growing at the same time. Although Pavlus puts river cruising at only 7 percent of overnight capacity, 25 or more new river vessels are due in 2027, mostly from established operators such as AmaWaterways, Emerald Cruises and Viking. Celebrity Cruises enters with upscale river sailings that year, and this fall Explora Journeys signed a letter of intent with a Dutch shipyard to build river vessels.
Routes are expanding with the fleets. Colombia’s Magdalena River joined AmaWaterways’ map in 2025, and Viking will add India’s Brahmaputra River in 2027. Themed departures, from Scenic‘s culinary sailings to American Cruise Lines‘ Mark Twain-themed itinerary, offer another way to match a client.
Clients also want more time ashore. Pavlus reports rising requests to extend a sailing with a land program, and the lines are packaging that combination. Uniworld Boutique River Cruises will launch a Cruise & Tour collection with sister brand Luxury Gold in 2027, and Avalon Waterways is pairing with sister company Globus on combined sailing-and-touring trips next year.
Why it Matters:
The takeaway is a wider prospect list: families, first-time cruisers and big-ship loyalists are now realistic river leads, not just retirees. Advisors can match clients through themed sailings and new exotic routes, and adding a land program can lengthen the trip and raise the booking’s value.
