Amsterdam: A City Best Savored with Intention

Amsterdam is a city that defies easy categorization. In a single visit, it channels the romance of Venice, the historic sophistication of London, the cultural depth of Paris, the culinary energy of New York and the indulgent spirit of Las Vegas, paired with the warmth and approachability of a city known for its genuinely friendly people. The result is a destination that belongs on every traveler’s bucket list and shines brightest when approached with intention.

On my most recent visit, I spent nearly 10 days exploring the city—on my own, alongside my husband, and even with our nephews, who joined us for two days—and a few things quickly became clear. First, Amsterdam is a city for everyone, welcoming travelers of all ages, identities and backgrounds with an openness that feels genuine rather than performative.

Second, Amsterdam rewards travelers who slow down; it’s definitely not a city to be conquered by checklist. Third, the city is best experienced on foot and from the water, where winding canals, historic facades and lived-in neighborhoods reveal themselves naturally over time. And finally, much like trying to select the perfect stroopwafel at the famous van Wonderen’s Stroopwafels shop, Amsterdam is meant to be enjoyed however your palate desires—inviting travelers to mix, match and savor the experience in a way that satisfies individual cravings.

For advisors crafting an unforgettable trip to Amsterdam, these are the experiences I would prioritize, thoughtfully layered to appeal to a wide range of travel styles, interests and appetites.

Experiences
These experiences form the backbone of any well-paced Amsterdam itinerary, balancing cultural depth with room to wander and discover.

  • Canal boat cruise
Best for: First-time visitors, couples, multigenerational travelers
One of the most effective ways to get oriented, a canal cruise offers historical context and architectural perspective from the water. I recommend scheduling it after sunset, when the city’s illuminated bridges and canal houses reveal their full magic.
  • Anne Frank House
Best for: History-focused travelers, families with older children
One of Amsterdam’s most powerful and emotionally resonant experiences. While it requires advance planning, it delivers an emotional impact and sets the tone for understanding the city’s commitment to remembrance, which is also visible in the plaques embedded throughout the streets marking the locations and names of people who were taken from their homes.
  • Amsterdam’s museum scene (with a contemporary focus)
Best for: Art lovers, design enthusiasts, cultural travelers
While Amsterdam is home to an exceptional range of world-class museums, Moco, Eye Film Museum and Stedelijk Museum highlight the city’s more contemporary, immersive side that pairing bold exhibitions with striking architecture and a dynamic approach to art and film.
  • Red Light District (obviously)
Best for: Curious travelers, adults-only groups
A storied chapter of Amsterdam’s countercultural history, best approached with context, curiosity and perhaps some moderation. While the neighborhood’s reputation for after-dark indulgence is well earned, The Bulldog Coffeeshop offers an easy, low-pressure entry point, introducing visitors to the origins of the city’s regulated cannabis culture, now a normalized and unmistakably Amsterdam part of everyday life.

When approached with care, curiosity and intention, Amsterdam becomes far more than a collection of sights, it becomes a lived experience shaped by pace, perspective and personal connection. These recommendations are not meant to be followed rigidly, but to be used as building blocks to design itineraries that reflect who clients are and how they want to feel. Whether lingering over a candlelit dinner, drifting quietly along the canals at dusk, or discovering spaces that feel welcoming and affirming, Amsterdam offers the flexibility to move beyond the expected and into moments that feel meaningful, memorable and entirely their own. And that, ultimately, is the power of doing Amsterdam right.
