United Airlines will introduce new nonstop service between Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) and Monterey Regional Airport (MRY) beginning in May 2026. The once-weekly seasonal flight, operating on Saturdays through late August, will provide direct access between the Midwest and California’s Central Coast.
“We’re excited to provide the Monterey community with the first direct flight to Chicago in nearly 50 years with the launch of our seasonal service starting next summer,” said Mark Weithofer, United’s Managing Director of Domestic Network Planning, in a media statement. “This new flight unlocks the opportunity for travelers from Chicago and all across the country to explore the iconic sights and coastal views of Monterey, while connecting residents to United’s expansive route network from our hub in Chicago.”
The Chicago–Monterey flight is scheduled to arrive in Monterey around midday and depart back to Chicago later that afternoon.
“This new flight represents another step forward in improving air service in and out of MRY—an essential factor in our region’s economic vitality,” said Chris Morello, Interim Executive Director of Monterey Regional Airport, in a media statement. “Our Board continues to prioritize air access as a foundation for growth across agriculture, defense, higher education, and tourism. United’s decision to bring mainline service back to Monterey is a strong signal of confidence in the Central Coast market.”
According to local tourism officials, the direct service enhances Monterey County’s visibility among Midwest travelers and supports broader tourism and economic development goals. The region, known for its 99 miles of Pacific coastline, includes popular destinations such as Carmel-by-the-Sea, Big Sur, Pebble Beach and the Salinas Valley, as well as a growing wine and culinary scene.
The announcement comes amid a period of transformation at Monterey Regional Airport, which is preparing for the debut of a new terminal in 2027.
