As Star of the Seas prepares to make her grand debut in Port Canaveral, the ship’s naming ceremony—a longstanding maritime tradition—was expected to be headlined by legendary Motown singer Diana Ross as godmother. But in an unexpected turn, Ross has withdrawn from the role just days before the August 20 event.
A Royal Caribbean spokesperson said in a statement, “We are disappointed that Diana Ross will not be able to join us as godmother of Star of the Seas.”

The singer has cancelled her appearance aboard the new ship for the celebration, which was scheduled to take place in the vessel’s AquaDome neighborhood—an entertainment showpiece unique to the Icon-class design.
Royal Caribbean confirmed her departure from the ceremony, citing “unforeseen circumstances,” and said a new godmother will be announced soon.
Ross, 81, is set to launch her Beautiful Love U.S. tour on August 16 in Saratoga, California, with her next performance not until August 28 in St. Louis—leaving the exact reason for her cancellation unclear.
As the second ship in the Icon Class, Star of the Seas will offer clients a vacation experience featuring eight immersive neighborhoods onboard, catering to all ages and travel styles. Features include the Category 6 waterpark, seven pools, entertainment—including Back to the Future: The Musical—and more than 40 dining and drinking venues.
Star of the Seas will sail year-round 7-night itineraries to top Eastern and Western Caribbean destinations from Port Canaveral (Orlando), Florida. Each sailing includes a visit to Perfect Day at CocoCay in The Bahamas—Royal Caribbean’s private island.
