AmaWaterways is giving travelers another option for river cruise experiences beyond Europe with the debut of AmaMaya, a new 120-guest ship sailing the Mekong River beginning in January 2027.
The ship will operate the line’s 7-night Charms of the Mekong and Riches of the Mekong itineraries through Vietnam and Cambodia, combining a small-ship experience with excursions focused on local culture, history and everyday life along the river.
Designed for the Mekong
AmaMaya will carry 120 guests in 60 staterooms—the same capacity and accommodation as sister ship AmaDara.
“The Mekong offers such a special way to discover Vietnam and Cambodia, bringing guests into close contact with the people and traditions of the region,” said Catherine Powell, CEO of AmaWaterways, in a press statement. “With AmaMaya, we wanted to build on that connection by inviting guests onto a ship that is inspired by its surroundings and the rivers it sails.”
Onboard, guests will have two dining venues, including Mekong Restaurant and The Chef’s Table, a specialty restaurant serving a multi-course tasting menu. Other amenities include a fitness room, sun deck pool and three massage rooms.
The Mekong Itinerary Is Part of the Product
On the Charms of the Mekong itinerary, travelers can explore Phnom Penh by tuk-tuk, visit the former royal capital of Oudong and participate in a traditional Buddhist blessing ceremony. In Vietnam, the itinerary includes a trishaw ride through Tan Chau, visits with local artisans and a sampan excursion through the Mekong Delta’s Tra Su Forest and Sanctuary.
Riches of the Mekong itinerary offers experiences in Cambodia and Vietnam as well, with the option to add a 4-night Central Vietnam extension. Both itineraries can also be paired with a 3-night Bangkok stay.
Why Consider AmaMaya?
European river cruising remains a major part of the market, but the 2026 season has also experienced operational challenges that can come with low water levels on rivers including the Rhine and Danube. That doesn’t make Europe a destination to avoid, but it does give advisors another conversation to have with clients who are interested in river cruising.
AmaMaya also gives advisors another option for clients who have already cruised Europe’s Rhine, Danube or other major rivers and want a new destination.
AmaMaya‘s first 2027 sailings are scheduled for early January, with the ship alternating with AmaDara on the Mekong throughout the season.
