In response to a growing demand for physically challenging travel experiences for shutterbugs of every skill level, Exodus Travels has added a new itinerary to its growing portfolio of photography tours.

Hosted by National Geographic Explorer, TV presenter and photographer George Kourounis, the Five Stans of the Silk Road itinerary will take photographers on a 3-week journey through Central Asia.

“It covers Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan; all former Soviet republics with incredible cultural and natural elements. It’s a photographer’s dream trip, but make no mistake, it’s also pretty hardcore,” said Kourounis in press materials.

Along the 23-day trip, guests will stay in local homes, yurt camps and village hotels; capture the day-to-day lives of ancient villages and urban centers; explore Islamic mosques and post-Soviet monuments; plus visit the city of Merv, a UNESCO World Heritage site raided by Genghis Khan’s Mongolian hordes in 1221. They’ll explore a variety of landscapes from sprawling deserts and valleys to mountain ranges, with a special stop at the Arslanbob Nature reserve, which is home to the largest and oldest walnut forest in the world. After a day of photographing mosques, palaces, bazaars, Soviet monuments, royal mausoleums, and more, guests can look forward to chatting with Kourounis who will be on hand to teach some tricks of the trade and help travelers work on their techniques.

“Like many Exodus trips, the Photographic Adventures have been designed for real travelers who aren’t afraid to push their limits,” said Kourounis in press materials. “But they’re also for photographers—amateur or otherwise—who want the added challenge of capturing that unforgettable shot.”

The Exodus Travels Photographic Collection also includes three additional tours: Arctic Lights & Whales available now through March 16, 2019; Botswana & Zimbabwe Lodge Safari available June 3-16, 2019; and Mont Blanc Highlights offered May 18-25, 2019.
