Azamara Cruises has announced a new partnership with Lowell Observatory, the research institution known for its astronomical discoveries and public education programs. The collaboration will bring expert-led programming to three solar eclipse cruises in August 2026, designed to give guests unobstructed ocean views of the rare celestial event.
These sailings present a unique opportunity to match astronomy enthusiasts and experiential travelers with itineraries that combine immersive destinations and once-in-a-lifetime skywatching. Each cruise will be accompanied by Lowell astronomers, who will guide guests through lectures, stargazing sessions, interactive demonstrations and live eclipse narration.
Special eclipse glasses will also be provided for safe viewing.
A Celestial Experience at Sea
“Partnering with Lowell Observatory allows us to elevate this rare phenomenon into something even more meaningful for our guests,” said Dondra Ritzenthaler, CEO of Azamara Cruises, in a media statement. “Their astronomers really bring the eclipse to life through stories, guidance and hands-on experiences that deepen understanding while creating moments of awe. It’s a natural extension of our Destination Immersion philosophy—offering not just a view of the world, but a richer connection to it.”
Three itineraries will be offered:
- Azamara Onward will sail an 11-night Mediterranean voyage departing Aug. 2, 2026, from Athens, visiting Santorini, Mykonos and Sicily before positioning in the Mediterranean Sea for the eclipse.
- Azamara Quest will operate a 12-night Ireland Intensive voyage, embarking Aug. 7, 2026, from Dublin, with viewing scheduled from the Atlantic Ocean off Ireland’s western coast.
- Azamara Journey will host an 18-night Arctic sailing, departing Reykjavik on Aug. 8, 2026, with eclipse viewing between Greenland and the Canadian Arctic.
For Lowell Observatory, the partnership builds on its 130-year tradition of eclipse research.
“For more than 130 years, Lowell Observatory has helped people discover the universe, and our partnership with Azamara Cruises gives us a new way to share this experience—under the stars at sea,” said Amanda S. Bosh, Ph.D, and Executive Director of Lowell Observatory, in a media statement. “Lowell scientists have a long tradition of eclipse research, and we’re excited to bring that history and passion to Azamara guests.”
