Nayarit’s tourism landscape is evolving with the introduction of new international air routes to Tepic/Riviera Nayarit International Airport.
“The launch of direct flights from Calgary, Vancouver, Houston, and Los Angeles marks a transformative moment for the state of Nayarit,” said Governor Miguel Angel Navarro Quintero, in a press statement. “Strengthening our international air connectivity is not only a boost to tourism, but also a powerful step forward in promoting investment, cultural exchange, and regional development. These new routes position Tepic and the Riviera Nayarit as accessible, world-class destinations ready to welcome travelers from North America and beyond. These new routes position Nayarit as a gateway to Mexico’s Pacific treasures and demonstrate growing international interest in our state.”
Nayarit: High Season Flights
Starting December 13, WestJet will operate the first direct flight between Canada and Nayarit, connecting Calgary to Tepic on a weekly basis with a 189-seat aircraft. Air Canada follows on Dec. 17, launching weekly service from Vancouver using 169-seat planes.
United States connectivity also sees a boost with United Airlines, which will offer a twice-weekly service from Houston to Tepic, commencing December 20. The 76-seat aircraft will operate on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Additionally, Volaris will inaugurate direct flights from Los Angeles to Tepic on July 16, further enhancing the region’s accessibility.
These new routes serve as gateways to Nayarit’s lesser-known destinations. While the Riviera Nayarit’s coastal hotspots, such as Nuevo Nayarit and Sayulita, have long attracted visitors, the state’s interior offers a distinct allure. The capital of Tepic, for example, is the launchpad for different adventures combining history, culture and natural beauty.
From Tepic, travelers can easily access an array of attractions. A 30-minute drive gets them to Matanchen Bay’s rolling waves or the seaside village of Aticama. The crater lake of Santa Maria del Oro, perfect for water activities, is just 40 minutes away. History enthusiasts will appreciate the Pueblos Magicos of Compostela and Jala, while those seeking unique experiences can visit Mexcaltitan, the “Mexican Venice” and the legendary birthplace of the Aztecs.
Nature lovers can explore Presa Aguamilpa for fishing and birdwatching, while beach aficionados will find hidden gems like Platanitos and Chacala within a 2-hour radius of Tepic.
Nayarit’s culinary scene is another draw—think local specialties like pescado zarandeado (flame-grilled fish) in Tepic or enjoy fresh seafood in coastal towns. The region’s cultural richness is evident in its festivals, traditional dances and sacred ceremonies.
With its Pacific coastline and Sierra Madre mountains, Nayarit caters to a wide range of interests, from surfing in Sayulita to birdwatching in San Blas, offering everything from luxury resorts to quaint towns.
