St. Maarten’s Tourism Boom is a Caribbean Success Story

The Dutch-Caribbean island of St. Maarten is experiencing a significant increase in tourism, with Q2 2025 reporting a 16.9 percent rise in airport arrivals and a 14 percent increase in cruise arrivals. This momentum continued through a record-breaking summer, establishing St. Maarten as one of the fastest-growing destinations in the Caribbean.

“There’s never been a better time to visit St. Maarten,” said Grisha Heyliger-Marten, Minister of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Transport and Telecommunication, in a press statement. “With more flights, a smoother arrival experience, and exciting new resorts opening up, our island is ready to welcome you with open arms. What makes St. Maarten truly special is our unique blend, a little bit of Europe, a whole lot of Caribbean, and a melting pot of cultures that you won’t find anywhere else. Whether you’re here for the beaches, the food, the music, or just the good vibes, St. Maarten is your Caribbean home away from home, any time of year.”

The island’s tourism renaissance can be attributed to several factors. The newly opened arrivals hall at Princess Juliana International Airport, coupled with a state-of-the-art automated border control system, has streamlined the entry and exit process. This system, featuring a digital entry form and biometric integration, has enhanced security and efficiency for travelers.

“The St. Maarten Government, Tourism Bureau and Princess Juliana International Airport have worked hand-in-hand to elevate the St. Maarten travel experience by synchronizing efforts across airport investments and improvements, as well as hospitality support and development to meet the increasing demand,” said May-Ling Chun, St. Maarten Director of Tourism, in the press statement. “Ongoing participation in key industry conferences  along with targeted marketing and airline meetings has been a key driver in expanding airlift into St. Maarten.”

St. Maarten’s product development is trending towards upscale, luxury-branded and mixed-use residential offerings. Notable additions include the beachfront, 200-guestroom JW Marriott St. Maarten Beach Resort & Spa, which opened in early 2024 with the largest spa on the island, and the upcoming Vie L’Ven Resort and Elie Saab Villas.

Getting There

In response to growing demand, airlines are increasing their services to St. Maarten. American Airlines and United Airlines will launch flights from Chicago in November 2026. JetBlue plans to introduce a nonstop service from Fort Lauderdale four times a week starting in December 2025. Southwest Airlines will begin operations from Orlando and Baltimore in April 2026.

Regional connectivity is also expanding. Z Air initiated thrice-weekly flights to and from Curaçao in July of this year. Winair has expanded its reach to include Barbados, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and Bonaire. And Contour Airlines is set to start service from San Juan, Puerto Rico, in November 2025.

St. Maarten offers a diverse array of experiences for visitors. The island boasts 37 beaches, serene lagoons and fascinating salt pans. Its capital, Philipsburg, is known for its vibrant atmosphere and cosmopolitan flair. Activities cater to a wide range of interests, from snorkeling and shopping to surfing and culinary exploration.

The island’s unique appeal lies in its multicultural heritage, blending Dutch influences with Caribbean charm. This cultural diversity is reflected in its cuisine, festivals and daily life, offering your clients an enriching experience beyond typical beach holidays.
