After nearly 40 years in the travel industry—and more than a decade in leadership at The Travel Institute—Diane Petras, CTIE, will retire at the end of this year, the organization announced. Petras has served as president of the non-profit education leader since 2018, following years of volunteer service and executive leadership.
“I’m able to let go and leave because things are truly the best they’ve ever been for The Travel Institute,” Petras reflected in a press statement, explaining her role was “never as much a job as it has been a passion and a calling.”
Leaving a Legacy
“Diane’s contributions to The Travel Institute cannot be overstated. She’s taken both The Travel Institute—and our entire industry—to a higher level,” asserted Gary Pollard, CTC, Chair of The Travel Institute Board of Directors; President and CEO, Ambassador Tours, in a press statement. “Her passion for quality education has inspired countless agents and organizations to prioritize education and become true travel professionals who embrace selling travel and offer greater value through a comprehensive business model.”
Pollard adds that Petras will be missed both professionally and personally by her team and the board, as well as by leaders and advisors throughout the industry.
A longtime advocate for professional development and agent education, Petras first volunteered with The Travel Institute in the 1990s, helping organize annual training conferences and serving on its national advisory board. In 2010, she joined as chief operating officer with a focus on technology integration and strategic planning. Eight years later, she was named president. Petras started in the retail travel industry in 1986 as an agent.
Under her leadership, the Institute underwent a sweeping digital transformation, transitioning from printed materials to a responsive e-commerce website, launching an interactive learning platform and developing a digital credentialing system for travel advisors.
Other notable achievements include awarding over $1 million in scholarships, producing award-winning curriculum for new and seasoned advisors and expanding partnerships with subject matter experts across the industry.
The Travel Institute board is currently searching for Petras’ successor. In the meantime, Petras will remain available to the organization in a consulting role through 2026 to ensure a smooth transition.
