Royal Caribbean has officially begun construction on its fifth Icon Class ship, marking the milestone with a keel-laying ceremony at Meyer Turku shipyard in Turku, Finland.
Set to debut in 2028, the yet-to-be-named ship will join the existing Icon Class lineup, with Royal Caribbean promising a mix of family experiences, entertainment, relaxation and thrills. The cruise line says more details, including the ship’s name and features, will be announced in the coming months.
During the ceremony, the ship’s first major steel building block was lowered into the dry dock. The keel forms the backbone of the vessel and provides the foundation for the rest of the construction.
Royal Caribbean and Meyer Turku also followed a longstanding shipbuilding tradition by placing freshly minted coins beneath the steel block before it was positioned, symbolizing good fortune for the ship’s journey ahead.
The fifth Icon Class ship is part of Royal Caribbean’s broader expansion of the series. A sixth Icon Class ship is scheduled to debut in 2029, followed by a seventh in 2030.
