Royal Caribbean International has turned to the stars—literally—for the godmother of its newest ship, Star of the Seas. Research astronaut Kellie Gerardi, the 90th woman in history to fly to space, will preside over the Icon-class vessel’s christening in Port Canaveral on Aug. 20, 2025.
A payload specialist, researcher, children’s book author and mother, Gerardi has earned a reputation for inspiring millions through her work and advocacy. Her appointment follows a last-minute change in plans for the much-anticipated naming ceremony.
New Godmother for Star of the Seas
Legendary Motown singer Diana Ross, announced as the ship’s godmother in June, withdrew from the role just hours before Star of the Seas was set to debut in Port Canaveral, citing unforeseen circumstances. Ross was scheduled to headline the celebration in the vessel’s AquaDome neighborhood, an entertainment space unique to the Icon-class design.
Delivered by the Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland earlier this summer, the LNG-powered Star of the Seas welcomed travel advisors, media, influencers and other trade professionals on Aug. 13 for a three-night cruise showcase that sailed to Perfect Day at CocoCay, Royal Caribbean’s private island in The Bahamas.
Following the christening, the 250,800-ton ship will launch its inaugural 7-night Western Caribbean voyage on Aug. 31, calling at Cozumel, Costa Maya and Roatan. Sailing year-round from Port Canaveral, Star of the Seas will alternate between Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries, with Eastern sailings featuring ports such as San Juan, St. Thomas, St. Maarten and St. Kitts.
As the second ship in the Icon Class, Star of the Seas offers eight themed neighborhoods designed to appeal to every type of traveler. Highlights include Category 6, the largest waterpark at sea; seven pools; more than 40 dining and beverage venues; and entertainment such as Back to the Future: The Musical.
The ship’s arrival marks the next chapter in Royal Caribbean’s Icon Class expansion. Two additional ships are on the horizon: Legend of the Seas in 2026 and a yet-to-be-named vessel in 2027.
