Study Reveals Travel Trends of U.S. Black Travelers

A new report from MMGY Travel Intelligence sheds light on the evolving travel motivations, planning and spending of U.S. Black travelers.

The study, conducted in partnership with the Black Travel Alliance (BTA) and the National Coalition of Black Meeting Professionals (NCBMP), highlights safety, inclusivity and cultural experiences as top priorities for this influential travel segment.

Black Leisure Travelers and Market Impact

Black leisure travelers represent a significant segment of the U.S. travel market, accounting for 184.12 million trips and $145 billion in expenditures in 2023.

The study finds that Black travelers are younger, more likely to be employed and often travel with children. The majority (79%) opt for road trips, averaging 247 miles per journey. Transportation and food and beverage rank as the highest categories of spending.

Safety and Community-Driven Travel Choices

With 79% of respondents stating that safety and a welcoming atmosphere significantly impact their travel decisions, destinations and hospitality brands are being urged to foster inclusivity.

Word-of-mouth recommendations remain a dominant factor in trip planning, particularly among Baby Boomers. Meanwhile, Millennials and Gen Z travelers show a strong preference for destinations that celebrate Black culture, support Black-owned businesses and engage in cultural experiences.

Increased Travel Spending and Premium Preferences

The report also highlights a rise in travel spending, with the average Black traveler projected to spend $2,992 in 2025—an increase of $1,300 compared to the previous year. Additionally, 87% of Black travelers express a willingness to invest in premium upgrades, such as luxury accommodations and enhanced airline seating.

Travel groups like the Black Travel Movement and Black Women Travels continue to play a vital role in fostering community and providing tailored experiences.
