Norwegian Cruise Line knows how to make a splash, and in honor of the line’s hometown of Miami, it has chosen Latin mega-star Luis Fonsi to be El Padrino—The Godfather—of its newest ship, Norwegian Viva. After the christening in Miami on Nov. 28, the ship will homeport in San Juan, Puerto Rico—the artist’s birthplace.

If Latin music isn’t your vibe, you might have heard of a little hit Luis Fonsi had with Justin Bieber, “Despacito,” which stayed on Billboard as the “Hot Latin Song” for 56 consecutive weeks and still plays wherever there’s dancing to be had.

“We are thrilled to welcome Latin music icon Luis Fonsi to the NCL family as Godfather of Norwegian Viva and to join us as we christen our newest ship,” said David J. Herrera, president of Norwegian Cruise Line, in a press statement. “Miami, our hometown, is immersed in Latin culture, and we want to celebrate Norwegian Viva’s debut with an infusion of Latin talent headlined by Luis. As a native Puerto Rican, who is also based in Miami, he brings people together from around the world with his energy, positivity and music, making him the perfect complement to the vibrant energy of Norwegian Viva. We cannot wait for him to join us as we celebrate this milestone moment later this year.”

Norwegian Knows How to Throw a Party

In addition to Fonsi, the ceremony will include performances by a virtual who’s who of Latin superstars, including Paulina Rubio, The Queen of Latin Pop; Miami native and SNL castmember Marcello Hernandez; and Puerto Rican singer Pedro Capó, grandson of legendary singer Bobby Capó, for those in the know. Want to take a listen? The line has prepared a special Live it Up! Spotify playlist to go with the ship’s theme.

Once Norwegian Viva finishes its christening voyage, it will begin cruising out of San Juan, Puerto Rico on Dec. 15, 2023. You can book your clients on any number of 7-day itineraries through April 2024 that include stops in picture-postcard perfect islands like Tortola, BVI; St. John’s, Antigua; Bridgetown, Barbados; Castries, Saint Lucia and others. In summer of 2024 the ship will return to a summer season of cruising through Europe with stops in Athens, Lisbon, Rome, and Venice.

Norwegian Viva is the second of six Prima Class ships and sister to Norwegian Prima. The ship promises the same elevated offerings with top-notch cuisine, incredible onboard experiences and the most spacious design of the brand to date. It debuts in August of this year with European cruises through the Greek Isles and the Mediterranean before it homeports in Puerto Rico.
