Have you ever looked at a painting and felt you could just fall right into it? This January, The Red Lion Inn is offering guests an opportunity to take that plunge past the frame with its Norman Rockwell Experience, a celebration of the American artist’s legacy and iconography.
Rockwell’s paintings glowed warm with life; guests nostalgic for his aesthetics, those well-worn blue jeans, bouncing pigtails, and ruddy cheeks depicted with his classic touch, will see them brought to life in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, the artist’s home for over two decades, and at The Red Lion Inn, whose own history Rockwell splashed onto his canvas in his 1967 work Stockbridge Main Street at Christmas. The town has not aged much since then, as a walk through its historic roads proves; the same white peaked roofs and snow-capped Chevy Bel Airs adorn the Main Street.
The Inn’s limited-time package includes a guided tour of the nearby Norman Rockwell Museum, where many of the artist’s most celebrated works, including the original Four Freedoms, as well as gems hidden amongst his 323 “Saturday Evening Post” covers, await. As part of the Norman Rockwell Experience, guests will recreate the famous Rockwell Thanksgiving feast pictured in Freedom from Want, where aunts, uncles, children and parents poke their heads into frame, awaiting the golden turkey grandma and grandpa are setting on the table. The Inn’s meal, served in the Main Dining Room, will consist of a family-style spread of slow-cooked turkey breast and gravy, stuffing, mashed potatoes, buttered greens, roasted carrots and cranberry sauce. A professional photographer will capture the moment for its future enjoyment. In addition to the feast, two of Rockwell’s favorite treats will also be available to guests: house-baked oatmeal cookies baked by The Red Lion Inn’s pastry chef and in-room whiskey sour cocktail kits.
