Walt Disney World Resort is entering a new phase of growth, with multiple expansions and enhancements planned for the Magic Kingdom. During Destination D23: A Journey Around the Worlds of Disney, Disney leaders, Imagineers and special guests unveiled details of several projects designed to refresh classic attractions and introduce new guest experiences.
New Look for Cinderella Castle & More
Cinderella Castle, the 189-foot centerpiece of the Magic Kingdom, will undergo a new transformation with a refreshed color scheme. Imagineers have studied the castle’s design history to create a palette inspired by its original look, featuring shades of gray, cream, blue and gold. The update follows past redesigns, including the 50th Anniversary Celebration enhancements. Additional details on the design process will be released as plans are finalized.
Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress will feature a new Audio-Animatronics figure of Walt Disney himself. The figure will appear in a new introductory scene, welcoming guests before the show. First introduced at the 1964 New York World’s Fair and relocated to Magic Kingdom in 1975, the Carousel of Progress is one of Disney’s most enduring attractions, known for its rotating theater and storytelling of technological change across generations.
Magic Kingdom’s TRON Lightcycle / Run will temporarily receive a themed overlay inspired by the upcoming film Tron: Ares, scheduled for release on October 10. The overlay introduces new red and orange visual effects along with a soundtrack composed by Nine Inch Nails. Starting September 15, guests will be able to experience the high-speed ride in its new format for a limited time.
Disney Imagineers are developing a new Villains-themed land at Magic Kingdom with design elements inspired by Art Nouveau architecture. To inform the project, the creative team traveled to Paris and Barcelona, where they studied the cultural and architectural influences that have shaped Disney’s portrayal of villains over the years.
The design concept, described as “Conjured Architecture,” blends historical styles with fantastical elements to create a setting that will immerse guests in stories centered on some of Disney’s most well-known characters.
