In the capital city of Madrid, a guided tour takes in such legendary sights as the Plaza Mayor and the Royal Palace, while contemporary Madrid shines in such areas as the Gran Via and the Santiago Bernabeu Football Stadium.
Westward from Madrid, the UNESCO World Heritage city of Caceres blends Roman, Islamic, Northern Gothic and Italian Renaissance architecture. Walking through its Medieval Quarter is truly a voyage to the past.
Heading south toward Andalusia leads to the spellbinding city of Cordoba with its spectacular Mosque–Cathedral dating back, incredibly, to 786–787 AD. In the Andalusian capital of Seville, you’ll visit the Seville Cathedral, one of the largest churches in the world (second only to St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome) as well as being the world’s largest Gothic church.
From there, the grandeur of a lost Moorish age lives on eternally at the Alhambra—palace and fortress of the Moorish monarchs of Granada—whose construction started in the 13th century.
Along the way in this trek through southern Spain, you’ll marvel at valleys and mountain ranges, sample local olive oil, watch Gypsy Flamenco shows and savor local cuisine and wines.
