PortMiami kicked off the 2018-2019 cruise season by setting a new 1-day record for passenger traffic as the port welcomed an estimated 52,000 cruise passengers on Dec. 9, 2018.

It’s definitely a busy time for PortMiami,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez in press materials. “I want to welcome all cruise visitors to Miami-Dade County and encourage them to explore all that our community has to offer.”

From safety and security, operations, and maintenance to customer service and other industry partners, the port’s team was ready to welcome travelers to the “Cruise Capital of the World.” Contributing to the record number of passengers arriving in Miami were nine cruise vessels: Carnival Horizon, Carnival Magic, Disney Magic, MSC Divina, Norwegian Getaway, Oceania Riviera, FRS Caribbean’s San Gwann, and Royal Caribbean’s Empress of the Seas and Allure of the Seas.

“PortMiami is home to the world’s most renowned cruise lines,” said chairwoman of the economic development and tourism committee Rebeca Sosa. “Last year the ‘Cruise Capital of the World’ handled more than 5.6 million cruise passengers, welcoming each and every one with open arms and a smile. We’re more than ready for the 2018-2019 cruise season!”

Royal Caribbean recently opened its newest terminal at PortMiami and plans are underway to build additional terminals for MSC CruisesNorwegian Cruise Line, and Virgin Voyages.
