Anantara Hotels, Resorts & Spas is preparing to launch its second property in Portugal in 2024. The new 5-star hotel and resort will be housed in a 15th-century former monastery in the picturesque village of Vila Viçosa in Portugal’s southern Alentejo region.

Spread over three floors, the Anantara Royal Vila Viçosa will feature 50 rooms, 10 suites and 16 residences. It will also have three restaurants, a wine cellar, a 40-meter outdoor pool as well as an indoor pool, fitness area, an Anantara Spa and conference facilities.

Overseeing the transformation of the building’s interior from a monastery to a resort is the global architecture and design firm Broadway Malyan, whose other projects have included Lisbon’s Tivoli Avenida Liberdade hotel and Royal Caribbean’s Miami Cruise Terminal.

The town of Vila Viçosa, which translates to “lush village” because of its fertile soil is often referred to as the “Princess of Alentejo”. As the former seat of the Dukes of Bragança, the town boasts a rich history with lots for travelers to see and do. As well as museums and churches such as Santa Maria do Castelo and Igreja dos Agostinhos, must-see sites include the Ducal Palace, the Castle and the local  cemetery to see the burial spot of the famous poet Florbela Espanca.

Anantara has teamed up with Portuguese Group Investaureum on the project. Anantara currently has more than 40 hotels in its portfolio, including properties in Thailand, Maldives, Indonesia, Vietnam, China, Cambodia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Seychelles, Mozambique, Zambia, U.A.E., Qatar, Oman, Tunisia, Portugal, Spain, Hungary, Italy and The Netherlands.
