Universal Destinations & Experiences is officially bringing its theme park brand to Europe, announcing that construction is now underway for its Universal United Kingdom Resort in Bedford, England.

Located about 45 minutes from London, the 540-acre development will feature a theme park with multiple immersive lands, attractions and story-driven experiences, along with a 500-room hotel and a retail, dining and entertainment district.

Universal Expands Its Global Theme Park Strategy

The UK project represents Universal’s first theme park resort in Europe. The company selected Bedford after more than two years of evaluation and planning. Universal cited the site’s strong transportation infrastructure, including rail connections to London and accessibility from across the United Kingdom and Europe.

“We have a bold ambition to bring Universal’s innovative and immersive experiences to new audiences,” said Mark Woodbury, Chairman and CEO of Universal Destinations & Experiences, in a media statement. “Universal United Kingdom Resort reflects that long-term strategy focused on key markets while continuing to enhance our existing parks and strengthen our position as a destination of choice for guests.”

Building on the Success of Epic Universe

The announcement comes as Universal continues to invest heavily in destination-based entertainment worldwide. The company recently celebrated the first anniversary of Universal Epic Universe in Orlando, its newest theme park.

According to Comcast NBCUniversal, the park helped generate significant economic activity across Central Florida, contributing to sustained growth in tourism-related tax revenues and creating thousands of jobs.

Universal also continues to expand its domestic portfolio. On July 1, the company will also debut Universal Kids Resort in Frisco, Texas, the first theme park designed specifically for families with young children, featuring seven themed lands with some of Universal’s most successful kids’ franchises and an integrated 300-room hotel.
