The American Society of Travel Advisors (ASTA) is emphasizing industry support and advocacy as the Department of Homeland Security shutdown continues to affect the travel system. The organization has created a resource section on its homepage designed to provide updates, guidance and access to advocacy tools during the disruption.
“Travel advisors are once again stepping up to help clients navigate disruption and uncertainty across the travel system,” says Zane Kerby, ASTA President and CEO, in a press statement. “During the Department of Homeland Security shutdown, ASTA is advocating for swift action, amplifying the voice of the travel industry and supporting the people who help keep travel functioning. We remain committed to ensuring advisors have the information, representation and resources they need during this challenging time.”
ASTA + USTA Dream Team
The initiative highlights ASTA’s ongoing collaboration with the U.S. Travel Association and several coalition partners to encourage congressional action and restore funding. As part of these efforts, ASTA has submitted formal comments to the House Committee on Homeland Security outlining the impact of the shutdown on travel operations, industry employees and the national travel economy. The organization is also encouraging agency leaders and other stakeholders to communicate directly with elected officials about how these funding lapses are affecting daily travel and business operations nationwide.
ASTA’s advocacy extends beyond legislative outreach. The association is providing real-time updates on disruptions to essential travel systems, underscoring the operational challenges affecting both travelers and businesses. It also continues to support federal employees through its partnership with the Federal Employee Education & Assistance Fund. ASTA contributed $10,000.00 to the fund’s emergency assistance program, which helps government workers facing hardship during the pay lapse.
The shutdown has introduced uncertainty to key areas of travel infrastructure, including airport security and border operations, as TSA employees and other essential staff navigate unpaid work periods. That uncertainty affects flight schedules, wait times and the overall traveler experience. With each passing day, the ripple effects extend further into related industries, from airlines and hospitality to corporate travel management and supply chains.
