Booking data from Railbookers indicates significant growth for rail vacations in 2026, with travelers looking for longer trips and booking well in advance. The company reports year-over-year increases across its 6-continent portfolio, signaling high demand for train travel worldwide.
“Last year was a banner year for rail travel, with 2026 poised to surpass it as demand continues to surge,” said Frank Marini, President and CEO of Railbookers. “From the dramatic growth we’re seeing in Italy, the U.K., and Switzerland to the increasing interest in destinations like Hungary and the Czech Republic, it’s clear that travelers are embracing rail not just as transportation, but as a fully customizable and immersive way to experience the world.”
Rail Travel Skyrockets
The United Kingdom leads destination growth with a 186 percent increase in passengers. Germany and France have also achieved triple-digit growth rates. Italy and Switzerland remain the top-selling destinations, with Italy experiencing a 98 percent increase in bookings for 2026. Eastern European countries, including Hungary, Croatia and the Czech Republic, are emerging as rapidly growing destinations for rail travel.
Of note is the fact that the average Railbookers journey in 2026 is expected to last 11 days, reflecting travelers’ growing desire for more extensive experiences. And, while the company offers flexibility to book departures from the next day to 24 months ahead, most 2026 bookings are occurring approximately 11 months before departure.
Multi-gen family travel has become increasingly popular, with groups spanning three generations choosing train travel for its accessibility and comfort. Honeymoon travel is another growing segment, with couples opting for custom, independent rail vacations across multiple European countries. Italy and Switzerland rank as the top single-country honeymoon destinations.
Consistent with 2025 patterns, travelers in 2026 are prioritizing immersive experiences, ranging from mountain adventures to museum visits. Railbookers also reports increased demand for convenience-enhancing options, such as private transfers and skip-the-line access at popular attractions.
