PONANT EXPLORATIONS is expanding its collaboration with Smithsonian Journeys for 2027, adding new departures and an all-new solar eclipse itinerary.
The A Solar Eclipse at Sea: Voyage Along the Iberian Peninsula journey is a round-trip sailing from Lisbon departing July 30, 2027. Guests aboard Le Boréal will have the opportunity to witness a rare solar eclipse over the Mediterranean Sea while the ship is in Malaga, Spain.
The itinerary explores Portugal’s Algarve region and Spain’s Andalusia, with stops in Portimao, Figueira da Foz, Marbella and Cadiz. The sailing will feature two Smithsonian Journeys Experts.
Expanded Global Portfolio for 2027
In addition to the new eclipse voyage, PONANT EXPLORATIONS and Smithsonian Journeys have announced several returning favorites for 2027, each staffed with two onboard experts. Highlights include:
Treasures of Japan and South Korea by Sea (8 nights): Departs May 1, 2027 – Busan to Osaka. Visits include UNESCO World Heritage sites such as Hiroshima Peace Memorial, Itsukushima Shrine and Bulguksa Temple; Japan’s famed onsen in Beppu; a traditional sake-making village; and Busan’s historic temples.
Cruising the Historic Cities of the Baltic Sea (7 nights): Departs June 11 & August 5, 2027 – Helsinki to Copenhagen. Two 2027 departures will feature an onboard presentation with former Polish President and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Lech Wałęsa while in Gdansk, along with visits to six Baltic nations and four UNESCO sites.
Antarctica: The White Continent (10 nights): Departs Jan. 17, 2027 – round-trip Ushuaia. Includes a pre-cruise night in Buenos Aires, wildlife viewing opportunities, landings at scientific and historical sites and optional hiking and kayaking.
