Japan’s Mitsui Ocean Cruises, operated by MOL Cruises, has announced the name of its newest luxury vessel: MITSUI OCEAN SAKURA, set to debut as a Japanese-flagged ship in late 2026.

The name “Sakura,” meaning cherry blossom, holds deep cultural significance in Japan—symbolizing renewal, beauty and the fleeting nature of time. The choice is also a nod to the line’s heritage, recalling its predecessors, Sakura Maru and Shin Sakura Maru.

At 32,477 gross tons with capacity for just 458 guests, MITSUI OCEAN SAKURA will be a boutique-style luxury ship offering intimate voyages designed to celebrate Japan’s seasons, culture and coastal beauty. Its itineraries will highlight a blend of short to medium-length cruises, with visits to iconic ports including Okinawa’s remote islands and Hokkaido’s northern harbors. Seasonal sailings will feature local festivals, fireworks, music and cuisine.

A Legacy of Excellence

“Our loyal and experienced crew will extend heartfelt hospitality, and our chefs will continue to delight our guests with the praise of delicious cuisine for which we are famous,” said Tsunemichi Mukai, President and Executive Officer of MITSUI OCEAN CRUISES.

Mitsui Ocean Sakura Captain Satoshi Ninomiya.

Former Nippon Maru Captain Satoshi Ninomiya has been appointed one of the ship’s Masters, bringing decades of experience. In the galley, acclaimed Executive Chef Katsutoshi Nakayama, also of Nippon Maru fame, will curate menus rooted in Japanese tradition while blending international flavors, ensuring dining remains a highlight of every journey.

Guests can expect spacious, all-suite accommodations—229 in total—each with private balconies. Dining and entertainment venues will reflect the cruise line’s dedication to Japanese elegance, while open deck space and serene lounges will encourage a sense of calm and connection with the sea.
