The 59-room Umbral, Curio Collection by Hilton boutique property has opened its doors in Mexico City—it is the brand’s debut in Mexico’s capital.
Part of an ambitious program to restore historical buildings in Mexico, Umbral, Curio Collection by Hilton is a restoration project from a heritage building that was constructed in 1924. Situated in downtown Mexico City, the timeless hotel overlooks the city’s most emblematic buildings, including the Metropolitan Cathedral, the County Hall and El Palacio de Hierro Department Store. Guests will also have convenient access to the Zocalo (main square) just two blocks away, as well as Museo del Templo Mayor, Chapultepec and the international airport.
“Recognized as the No. 1 city to visit this year by National Geographic, Mexico City has continued to remain a focus in our brand’s expansion to destinations where today’s travelers want to go,” said Mark Nogal, global head, Curio Collection by Hilton, in a press release statement. “We look forward to introducing travelers to our unexpected and authentic Curio Collection experiences that truly embody the local culture, while we also prepare for the opening of our second in-market property with Hotel Lafontaine later this year.”
Umbral features sleek, minimalistic furniture in neutral tones of white, beige and brown, as well as natural materials such as light and dark woods. All 59 guestrooms are comprised of two distinct environments—a darker intimate entrance that leads to a light guestroom through a golden frame, symbolizing an umbral. Each of the 12 suites also offers a record player with a personalized vinyl collection—based on guests’ preferences—through a partnership with local vinyl shop La Roma Records.
Amenities
As the city’s only hotel with an onsite gallery, Umbral features more than 100 pieces of art by local artists such as Jorge Montiel, Andrea Vores and Tomas Diaz. Travelers who explore the gallery can then pass through into the hotel’s intimate library with a carefully curated selection of literature; sound library with its very own vinyl record player; or cinema, playing culturally immersive movies as well as foreign titles, often reflecting the selection from local film festivals. The property also features a 375-sq.-ft. room for intimate meetings and events for up to eight guests and a rooftop terrace for outdoor functions of up to 150 attendees.
Those wanting to explore the city can consult with Umbral’s Experience Curator to immerse themselves into the local culture through unique itineraries, created based on their curiosity type. Whether an epicurean who loves culinary and beverages or pathfinder seeking outdoors adventures, an easy online quiz can identify the guest’s curiosity type to help the curator craft unique experiences for guests. For example, the Experience Curators can organize architectural tours, clandestine art exhibitions and gastronomy tours, as well as musical experiences at local jazz and rock bars.
Guests can lounge on Umbral’s rooftop terrace, complete with an outdoor heated pool, fitness center and a Wellness Bar featuring a wide variety of fresh smoothies and juices like Deep Detox and spinach-mint or a wellness apple ginger shot to start the day. The expansive 8,795-sq.-ft. deck also features a bar and restaurant.
Dining
Travelers can opt for comfort food at Terraza Umbral Restaurant, which incorporates local flavors into traditional dishes such as Duck & Sirloin Tacos, Tropical Ceviche and Shrimp Toasts. For after-dinner drinks, guests can then stop by Terraza Umbral Bar, an exclusive mixology rooftop bar conceptualized by the owners of locally renowned bar Limantour. The rooftop bar offers an extensive menu of seasonal cocktails based on Mexican spirits, such as their signature cocktail Independencia crafted with mezcal, lemon juice, passion fruit juice and campari.
To celebrate the milestone opening, Umbral has launched two special offerings for guests. Through Dec. 30, 2019, travelers can take advantage of The Cross Over the Umbral package, which includes overnight accommodations, two signature Independencia cocktails at the Terraza Umbral Bar, breakfast for two on the hotel’s rooftop and a $50 dining credit. Additionally, guests who book stays between Aug. 31 and Dec. 1 will earn 1,000 Hilton Honors Bonus Points per night; the offer is valid through Dec. 1, 2019.
