“Knowledge is power” is a famous proverb that especially holds true today. It was also the focus of a COVID-19 Global Science Summit sponsored by Carnival Corporation and the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC).
The COVID Science Summit featured the latest scientific knowledge and evidence-based best practices related to prevention, detection, treatment and mitigation of this virus that has caused havoc in the world.
The three-hour program consisted of a series of panels, each focused on an area of science related to COVID-19 featuring a distinguished group of top global medical, epidemiology and public health experts. Many of these experts are working with Carnival on its enhanced health and safety protocols.
The focus of the summit was to, “learn as much as we can to cut through the noise which is bombarding us every day and provide a baseline grounded in science and the latest facts,” explained Arnold Donald, president and CEO of Carnival, and a moderator of the Summit.
Glimmers of hope were offered during the Summit. “This is a solvable situation,” explained Dr. Thomas J. Cahill, founder and managing partner of Newpath Management.
Key to emerging out of the pandemic are four crucial protocols: testing, wearing of face coverings, social distancing, and contact tracing.
“We can mitigate the spread by carrying out these best practices,” described Dr. Michael Z. Lin, MD, PhD, associate professor of neurobiology, bioengineering, and chemical and systems biology at Stanford University.
“Wearing a mask reduces your risk of getting COVID by 80 to 96 percent. If everyone wore a mask for two weeks in theory, this epidemic will go away,” Lin added.
The panel examined real-time insights and the most up-to-date scientific findings from across all fields of knowledge in the public and private sectors.
The WTTC/Carnival Corporation Global Scientific Summit on COVID-19 was broken down into three one-hour sessions focusing on:
- The Science of COVID-19 – a discussion about the virus SARS-CoV-2 and the disease it causes, COVID-19.
- The Prevention, Treatment and Cure of COVID-19 – a discussion on treatments, prevention methods and the cures/vaccines in development.
- Life in a COVID World – how do we live in a world with COVID-19.
