This week, Ponant revealed the name of its newest polar exploration vessel: Le Commandant Charcot. The hybrid electric icebreaker, which is the first of its kind, was named in honor of Captain Jean-Baptiste Charcot, who was known as “the gentleman of the Poles.”
Captain Charcot had a true passion for sailing and was an important figure of French polar expeditions. The new ship will be fitted with the latest technology for minimizing environmental impact, as well as a scientific laboratory for conducting operational oceanography missions and research. Itineraries on Le Commandant Charcot, which is scheduled to launch in 2021, will offer passengers a chance to discover the Geographic North Pole (latitude 90 degrees North) and parts of Antarctica, such as the Ross Sea, Charcot Island and Peter Island. Pre-bookings on Le Commandant Charcot are currently available with full-fare bookings beginning on April 11, 2019.
