“I am honored and humbled to be considered for this role,” said Commissioner Jennifer Matarangas-King, in a press statement. “Tourism is one of the most powerful tools we have to shape the future of these Virgin Islands. It drives investment, fuels entrepreneurship, and celebrates our identity. I look forward to working alongside our tourism stakeholders and the incredible team at the Department to elevate our product, empower our people and expand our reach as a premier Caribbean destination.”

Matarangas-King, a St. Croix native with over 30 years of experience in strategic communications and public affairs, brings a wealth of knowledge to the role. Her background includes experience in both the public and private sectors, with roles such as press secretary to Governor Roy Schneider and public relations director for Senator Vargrave Richards. Most recently, she held a leadership position at Viya, where she oversaw public relations, corporate communications and strategic planning initiatives.

U.S. Virgin Islands’ Record-Breaking Growth

The nomination follows a transformative era for U.S. Virgin Islands tourism under outgoing Commissioner Joseph Boschulte. During his tenure, the Territory led the Caribbean in Average Daily Rate (ADR) and saw record-breaking air and cruise arrivals. The Department successfully reimagined signature festivals, launched award-winning marketing campaigns and established partnerships across sports, entertainment and global travel markets.

These efforts resulted in consistent economic recovery, increased visitor spending and record-high collections for the Tourism Advertising and Revolving Fund (TARF). The U.S. Virgin Islands emerged as a top destination during the pandemic, a period of global tourism disruption.

Governor Bryan expressed confidence in Matarangas-King’s ability to lead the Department, citing her strategic thinking, communication skills and commitment to service. Her deep understanding of the Territory’s culture and strong service record align with the Department’s focus on responsible growth, innovation and global brand expansion.

To ensure a smooth transition, Boschulte will provide support to Matarangas-King and the Department during the interim period.
