2017 was a very bad, no good, horrible, terrible year for Puerto Rico, but according to Discover Puerto Rico, the island’s destination marketing organization, the recovery has been epic. While no doubt there’s still work to be done, tourism has shown itself to be a strong pillar of aid to local communities.
Puerto Rico has set records for tourism growth year over and 2022 is shaping up to be no exception. Here are some statistics that should inspire confidence in booking clients looking to vacation in a Caribbean destination that requires no passport and no exchange rate issues.
- Since the beginning of 2022, the island has broken its record of jobs in the Leisure and Hospitality sectors every month, now surpassing 86,700 employed
- Workers in the Leisure and Hospitality sectors have increased by 15.4% in the past 12 months, with 3,300 new jobs being created in 2022 alone
- The Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan arrivals saw a 23% increase from 2021 with 2.1 million passengers, the highest total number of passengers since 2017
- During the first seven months of 2022, accommodations in Puerto Rico generated $1 billion, a figure that was reached for the first time in 2021
- Through the end of July, year-to-date lodging revenue is up 36% compared to last year
- Through the end of July 2022, overall lodging demand was 18% higher than a year ago
- Hotel RevPAR has reached its highest level ever recorded at $209, a 56.9% increase from 2021
