Guests sailing with Holland America Line can now bring home a sustainable piece of their voyage—literally. The cruise line has introduced a set of four coasters made from upcycled carpet once used aboard its ships, marking the first recycled carpet product to be sold in the cruise industry.
From Carpets to Coasters
The coasters are the result of a partnership with Danish carpet manufacturer Dansk Wilton, known for its ReBond material made from reclaimed textiles. Holland America Line has already transformed 3,300 pounds of carpet waste collected during recent dry-dock projects on Oosterdam, Eurodam, and Nieuw Amsterdam into 12,000 coasters now available in onboard shops.
“This project reflects our ongoing journey toward more sustainable practices,” said My Nguyen, Director of Interior Design at Holland America Line, in a press statement. “These coasters are a tangible example of how discarded resources can be given a second life in the very environment they came from. We are proud to be the first in the industry to partner with Dansk and innovate carpet waste into beautiful usable products that our guests can enjoy.”
The new retail item is part of Dansk Wilton’s broader Re:Shape initiative, which explores creative ways to repurpose carpet waste. Future products could include notebooks, postcards, artwork, door signs and other items made from Holland America Line’s retired carpets, extending the life of materials that would otherwise be discarded.
By the end of October 2025, the coasters will be available fleetwide, giving travelers a unique memento of their trip while supporting sustainable design at sea.
