A recent survey of travel advisors reveals a notable shift in consumer booking patterns, with more travelers opting for the shoulder season for their vacations to avoid peak-season prices and crowds. The April-May 2025 survey of TRAVELSAVERS and NEST affiliates provides great insights into these evolving trends.

Nearly one-third of surveyed advisors report increased shoulder season bookings compared to last year, while 35 percent indicate consistent year-over-year performance. Only 27 percent note a decline in shoulder season business. Meanwhile, six percent of advisors report no distinct shoulder season at all, experiencing steady sales throughout the year.

“Our sales have grown by double digits as travelers are eager to roam the globe,” said Kathryn Mazza-Burney, TRAVELSAVERS Chief Sales Officer and NEST President, in a press statement. “Their most prized ally is a professional advisor who can help them secure the best possible value and experience no matter when they choose to travel. Advisors can design a trip that meets their preferences and brings their travel dreams to life.”

Shoulder Season for the Win

The survey shows that 20 percent of advisors are experiencing higher-than-normal last-minute bookings, while 40 percent report typical levels of last-minute reservations. This trend reflects the practical advantages of shoulder season travel—greater inventory availability allows travelers to be more spontaneous with their plans, allowing them to adapt to factors such as weather conditions and pricing fluctuations.

The survey data quantifies these trends.

Shoulder Season Bookings:

  • 12 percent report increases of 10 percent or more from last year
  • 20 percent note increases between 1 and 9 percent
  • 35 percent see the same bookings as last year
  • 16 percent report decreases between 1 and 9 percent
  • 11 percent show decreases of 10 percent or more
  • 6 percent indicate no distinct shoulder season exists

Last-Minute Bookings:

  • 20 percent report higher-than-normal volume
  • 40 percent experience normal volume
  • 40 percent observe no last-minute booking trend

The survey was conducted between April 22 and May 9, 2025, with participation from consultants affiliated with TRAVELSAVERS and NEST agencies throughout the United States and Canada.
