Israel is preparing to host the Catholic Jubilee, a religious event that takes place every 25 years. This celebration, which focuses on forgiveness, atonement and reconciliation, presents a unique opportunity for travel advisors to offer their clients an extraordinary experience in the Holy Land.
“The 2025 Catholic Jubilee in Israel will be a wonderful time for travelers of all faiths to experience this extremely holy and important milestone in religious history,” said Jill Daly, Director, Israel Ministry of Tourism, Midwest Region, in a press statement. “With an array of events and supplemental prayer times, the Catholic Jubilee will be felt and appreciated by Catholic travelers, as well as anyone who honors the faith.”
Events in Israel
The year-long celebration in 2025 will feature numerous events and pilgrimages, emphasizing important Catholic sites across Israel. One of the key sites is the Basilica of the Annunciation, located in Nazareth. This site holds great significance as it commemorates where the Angel Gabriel appeared to the Virgin Mary, and it will be a focal point for prayer during the Jubilee. Another significant location is the Sea of Galilee, where various sites around this iconic body of water will host gatherings and prayer services. Notable locations include the Mount of Beatitudes and Capernaum, both of which played important roles in Jesus’ ministry.
Jerusalem, the holy city, will be at the center of multiple events throughout the Jubilee. Highlights include a special procession along the Via Dolorosa, services at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and reflective opportunities at the Garden of Gethsemane.
Special events during the Jubilee include Holy Week, from April 13-19, when all Christian denominations will celebrate Holy Week and Easter concurrently. On June 8, Pentecost will be celebrated with gatherings commemorating the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles. Additionally, the Holy Fire Ceremony is scheduled for April 19 at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, preceding Easter celebrations.
Travel advisors should also note other significant locations that may appeal to both religious and secular travelers. The Churches in Tabgha are associated with Jesus’ miracle of loaves and fishes, offering a connection to this biblical event. The Mount of Olives, a historically rich landmark, provides panoramic views of Jerusalem and is steeped in religious history. Lastly, the Christian Quarter in the Old City serves as an epicenter of pilgrimage, featuring ancient roads, museums and local businesses, offering a blend of spiritual and cultural experiences.
