The 49th edition of Mexico’s Tianguis Turistico ended on a high note with exceptional results and a historic achievement as the first-ever binational tourism fair spanning both Mexico and the United States. Held at the Baja California Center with activities in Tijuana, Rosarito and San Diego, California, the event earned a Guinness World Record for highest attendance at a tourism fair in Mexico.

Mexican Tourism Secretary Josefina Rodriguez Zamora noted that 8,781 attendees from 46 countries participated in this groundbreaking edition. The innovative cross-border format created new opportunities for all attendees, bringing together 3,957 exhibitors, 1,187 companies and 1,773 buyers. Notably, 69 percent of purchasers came from the United States and Canada.

For travel advisors and buyers seeking productive business connections, the fair delivered substantial results with 71,882 business appointments. According to official data, 50 percent of these meetings resulted in direct sales, providing immediate return on investment for participants. The economic impact for Baja California reached $70.5 million, with local accommodations reporting occupancy rates exceeding 90 percent.

The San Diego portion of the event featured a permanent “Ventana a Mexico” (Window to Mexico) space established within the Mexican consulate, designed to serve as an ongoing tourism promotion center. Seven Mexican states—Zacatecas, Nayarit, Oaxaca, Chihuahua, Hidalgo, Aguascalientes and Jalisco—participated in the U.S. activities, showcasing their tourism offerings to international travel professionals and consumers.

“This cross-border initiative should become a model for other consulates and embassies to serve as tourism liaisons and ambassadors for our country’s wealth of experiences,” Secretary Rodriguez Zamora stated during the closing ceremony.

The event served as a key platform for announcing significant air connectivity improvements, with Viva Aerobus announcing 11 new routes (seven international) and Volaris adding 8 domestic and 15 international routes in the coming months. Aeromexico introduced new flights from Mexico City to several international destinations, bringing their total route network to 118.

Travel advisors will find it valuable to note the most sought-after tourism segments during business meetings: beach and cruise experiences (36 percent), cultural tourism (33 percent), nature-oriented activities (23 percent), adventure tourism (22 percent), social tourism (22 percent) and gastronomy (16 percent).

The fair introduced format innovations, including free public activities across Baja California municipalities extended the fair’s reach beyond the traditional industry attendees.

All 32 Mexican states participated in the Tianguis marketplace, providing attendees with comprehensive destination information from across the country. This full representation allowed buyers to expand their product portfolios beyond traditional tourist destinations.

Acapulco 2026

Looking ahead to 2026, tourism officials announced that the landmark 50th edition of Tianguis will return to Acapulco, Guerrero, scheduled for April 27-30. Guerrero Governor Evelyn Salgado, who received the formal handover during the closing ceremony, called it “a historic responsibility to the people of Mexico.”

The “Acapulco Transforms With You” strategy has channeled more than $766 million into rehabilitating tourism infrastructure throughout the region. These improvements are already showing results, with Acapulco reporting a 95.2 percent average hotel occupancy during Easter 2025—a 43.7 percent increase compared to the previous year. During that holiday period, Acapulco welcomed 191,350 tourists—59.2 percent higher than the prior year.

For travel advisors specializing in Mexico, the record-setting 2025 edition of the Tianguis Turístico demonstrates Mexico’s strengthened position in the global tourism marketplace, offering advisors expanded opportunities to develop distinctive experiences for their clients across diverse destinations.
