Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) is welcoming Charles “Bud” Darr as its new president and CEO, effective Feb. 3. Darr will succeed Kelly Craighead who has led the organization for the past five years.
Darr returns to CLIA after previously serving as the organization’s Senior Vice President of Technical and Regulatory Affairs from 2010 to 2017. He returns to CLIA from MSC Group, where he served for more than seven years as its Executive Vice President of Maritime Policy and Government Affairs. Darr’s career also includes key roles with the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Navy and Merchant Marine, as well as leadership positions in various influential industry organizations.
New Chapter for CLIA
In his new role, Darr will oversee the next phase of CLIA’s global strategy. Darr expressed his excitement about returning to CLIA, highlighting the dynamic opportunities ahead.

Darr’s extensive maritime experience includes involvement with numerous global organizations, including the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), BIMCO and the World Shipping Council, which will further strengthen CLIA’s influence worldwide. Additionally, Darr’s connections with the broader maritime community, including shipbuilders, ports and service providers, will be instrumental in CLIA’s continued growth and strategic direction.
Darr began his education in Submarine Nuclear Engineering before completing his undergraduate degree at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. During his service with the U.S. Coast Guard, he earned his law degree from George Washington University Law School.
Kelly Craighead’s tenure at CLIA was marked by her leadership through the challenges of the pandemic, where she helped guide the organization and the cruise industry toward recovery. Darr’s appointment marks a new chapter for CLIA as it continues its efforts to foster growth, innovation and sustainability within the global cruise industry.
