As demand for luxury wellness travel continues to rise, The Retreat Costa Rica, a wellness resort and spa located in the Costa Rican rainforest, has unveiled a $4 million expansion designed to elevate the guest experience through health, relaxation and connection with nature.
Founded by chef and wellness expert Diana Stobo, The Retreat’s 26,500-square-foot expansion introduces a new clubhouse, two new restaurants and 10 luxury lofts—each carefully designed to blend indoor-outdoor living and support guests’ physical and emotional well-being.
“These luxurious new facilities are built to embrace the region’s verdant topography—offering more ways to experience peace, relaxation and connection,” said Stobo, who drew inspiration for the expansion from the Sanskrit concept of santosha, meaning contentment and acceptance.
A Wellness Hub: The Santosha Clubhouse
At the center of the expansion is the 16,500-square-foot Santosha Clubhouse, an open-air communal space designed to support wellness programming. The clubhouse incorporates pale woods, indigenous relics, rustic furnishings and a prominent guanacaste tree that integrates the surrounding natural environment into the setting.
Key wellness features include:
- A 50-foot lap pool with mosaic art.
- A state-of-the-art fitness center equipped with cardio machines, free weights and whole-body equipment.
- A 1,600-square-foot yoga shala for group sessions of up to 50 guests.
New Luxury Lofts Inspired by Nature
The expansion also includes 10 new Santosha Lofts, each measuring 945 square feet and offering panoramic views of the Nicoya Peninsula and the Pacific Ocean. The lofts are designed with feng shui principles and feature minimalist interiors, teak furnishings and handcrafted stone elements to create a natural, understated aesthetic.
Bathrooms include hand-carved artisan doors, glass showers, oversized windows and selenite crystals, with design elements intended to promote relaxation and a connection to the surrounding environment. The Retreat has also expanded its culinary offerings with two new dining venues:
- Mystique: A 42-seat restaurant featuring a menu inspired by the region’s natural bounty.
- La Diosa: A rooftop lounge serving artisanal cocktails and small plates, complete with plush seating and open-air jungle views.
Beyond its new offerings, other resort highlights include a farm-to-table organic restaurant, an organic coffee plantation, two saltwater pools, a yoga studio, a meditation deck, organic gardens, river swings, jungle and river paths and sweeping views of the Gulf of Nicoya.
