Fincantieri—one of the world’s largest shipbuilding groups—has contracted with Viking to build two new cruise ships to be delivered in 2028 and 2029, respectively. With 499 cabins accommodating 998 passengers, the new vessels will be considered “small cruise” ships.
Built according to the latest environmental rules and navigation regulations, the new vessels also will boast such innovations as eco-friendly fuels and sustainable zero-emission power generation systems.
Fincantieri: The Cruise Industry is Back and Booming
Fincantieri affirms the new ships have added to the company’s solid commercial pipeline—they recently closed a number of major ship orders—confirming the cruise market’s full recovery and strong momentum, with passenger volumes returned to pre-pandemic levels.
It also demonstrates the shipbuilder’s strong, enduring relationship with Viking, which goes back to 2012 and as of today, includes a total of 20 vessels, including two purpose-built expedition units of the subsidiary Vard.
“This order further cements our relationship with Viking and establishes Fincantieri as the partner of choice for ship owners looking to build vessels for for both current and future energy sources,” said Pierroberto Folgiero, Fincantieri’s CEO and Managing Director in a media announcement. “Together, Fincantieri and Viking are leading the shipping industry on the path to net zero. With this contract, Fincantieri confirms its strong order pipeline and its reputation as a long-term partner of excellence within the cruise sector, as started in our 2023-27 Industrial Plan.”
