Passengers due to sail on Carnival Cruise Line’s newest ship, Carnival Celebration, will encounter The Gateway, a new zone celebrating travel and the thrill of discovering new places.

The design of the new promenade was inspired by the world’s grand train stations and airport terminals. Spread over two decks, it features shops, restaurants and bars, including Latitudes, a bar with travel-themed menus and a mechanical split-flap display board like the kind found in old train stations. The recently-announced Golden Jubilee bar and lounge is also located in this area. Among the restaurants in The Gateway is Emeril’s Bistro 1397, the second eatery by restaurateur Emeril Lagasse on a Carnival Cruise Line vessel. Unlike Emeril’s Bistro 1396 on sister ship Mardi Gras, which features Creole classics, the menu onboard Carnival Celebration will also include the chef’s favorite dishes from around the world.

A technical highlight of the promenade are the 12 large multimedia virtual windows and the ceilings decorated with 100 LEDs. What passengers see out of the virtual windows will change throughout the day, and at night they will be used to create immersive experiences for themed evenings. Each night will have a different theme, with the food and drink offerings, and displays on the virtual windows, all corresponding to that theme. On Mexican Lido night, for example, guests can sip on margaritas while scenes featuring ancient Mayan cities are shown on the virtual windows.

“When designing this innovative and transformative environment, we wanted to make sure that there was something new and exciting to see and experience every time a guest walks through the zone between day and night, and from day to day,” said Ben Clement, senior v.p. of new builds, refurbishment and product innovation. “We also wanted to ensure that the entire promenade in The Gateway was connected and that the upper level was engaged with what is happening below.”

The Gateway is the sixth and final zone aboard Carnival Celebration, joining 820 Biscayne, Celebration Central, The Ultimate Playground, Summer Landing and Lido zones. The ship will debut in November as part of the company’s 50th birthday celebrations.
