[Updated] Unusual Winter Storm Freezes the Gulf Coast

The winter storm that moved across the U.S. Gulf Coast brought record-breaking snowfall to states like Louisiana, Florida and Alabama.

According to Weather.com, Mobile, Alabama, and Pensacola, Florida, saw record snowfall with 7.5 inches and 7.6 inches, while Baton Rouge recorded 7.6 inches. New Orleans received 8 inches, and Lafayette topped the list with 9 inches.

Up to five inches of snow was reported in parts of coastal North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia, prompting a state of emergency in parts of the Atlanta area.

As the storm moved east, crews near Houston, Texas, plowed highways, while downtown streets, covered in white, remained virtually deserted during the morning rush. The snow in New Orleans tied a record set in 1895. The last time the city had received any measurable snowfall was in 2009, according to the National Weather Service.

A snowstorm warning was in effect for 31 million people, from southern Texas east to Georgia and north to the Carolinas and into Virginia.

The storm impacted flight travel today with 1,708 flights canceled and 1,975 delayed at airports in Houston, Atlanta and New Orleans, which experienced the greatest impact. Tuesday saw the most disruption with 2,353 flights canceled and 5,002 delayed.
