Immersive Peruvian Experience in the Andean Mountains

There’s a gem of a property tucked away in the Andean Mountains that’s a perfect fit for well-heeled clients who want to immerse themselves in Peruvian culture and have easy access to the Inca citadel, Machu Picchu: Sumaq Machu Picchu Hotel.

The 62-suite property, which recently underwent a renovation, offer views of the Vilcanota River and the stunning Andean mountains that embrace it. Located in Aguas Calientes, the boutique property, which is a Virtuoso Preferred Hotel, has played host to Trevor Noah and Brian Underwood, but even when your clients aren’t celebrities, they’ll be welcomed with open arms to this family-owned property, says Angie Clavijo, the property’s general manager.

The hotel is elegant without being too formal, with designs that embrace historic Peruvian and Andean themes and symbols. Stand-out suites include the Imperial Suite, with butler service, in-room Jacuzzi, and panoramic views of the surroundings. Also among the suite categories is the single Sumaq Deluxe Family Room, located on the lower level of the hotel, and able to accommodate four adults and four children.

In fact, says Clavijo, the hotel, although ideal for honeymooners and couples, is a great option for families. She notes that the hotel has many activities for children and keeps them engaged, allowing the parents to escape to, perhaps, a romantic tasting menu on a private terrace.

When asked about other hotel offerings, Clavijo enthusiastically lists some of the coolest offerings guests can find at the resort—from an Andean wedding blessing to cooking classes, tasting menus, private tours of Machu Picchu for children, as well as a visit to Machu Picchu with a shaman for adults, not to mention nature and cultural tours to places less visited. She also points to the Flavors of the Andes tasting menu, as well as to one of the hotel’s newest offerings—a visit to one of the Sacred Valley’s most unique potato fields, with 70 different varieties. This gastronomic potato tour is conducted by Peru’s acclaimed “Potato Whisperer,” and combines a visit to the potato fields in the storied Sacred Valley, a tasting menu of unique potato dishes, a cooking class and a tasting of potato-inspired wines.
