Perillo’s Learning Journeys, a division of Perillo Tours that specializes in hands-on learning travel experiences, is offering immersive land and river cruise itineraries to families.

For example, on the 9-day Italian Family Discovery private itinerary, travelers will embark on a journey through Rome, Florence and Venice with opportunities to skip the line at the Coliseum, learn the basics of hand-to-hand combat at gladiator school, and try local cuisine across the country. An Espresso and Gelato walking tour will take guests through Rome in search of the best local treats and tiramisu, while in Florence, kids can learn how to make a classic pizza from scratch. In Venice, families will participate in a mask-making class to learn the ancient techniques of papier mache. Another Perillo’s Learning Journeys offer is the 10-day Souther Africa-Botswana-Namibia-Zimbabwe river cruise that takes travelers along Lake Kariba, Gache-Gache, and the Sanyati Rivers on the 8-cabin MS African Dream. The itinerary includes a trip to the Victoria Falls and a visit to local villages in Namibia to learn about the traditions, culture, and customs of the country. Families will dine on local delicacies at a floating restaurant in the middle of the Chobe River after exploring Chobe National Park by jeep safari, and spend a day at the Matusadona National Park, which is home to elephants, hippos, crocodiles, and more. Departures are available on June 22, 2019 from $8,108 pp dbl, and on Nov. 1, 2019 from $7,100 pp dbl.

Families interested in visiting Machu Picchu can opt for the Peru: A Family Adventure in the Andes itinerary, which explores the nature, archaeology, and handicrafts of the region. The weeklong trip begins in Cusco with a visit to an alpaca farm and a textile showroom where guests learn traditional weaving. The trip also includes tours of Machu Picchu and Coricancha to explore the country’s complex architecture and history. On the last day, travelers will visit the home of Sabino, a musician raised in Cusco who makes traditional instruments, where children can learn to play Andean drums, as well as the traditional charango from Spain, and more. This itinerary departs on July 14, 2019 with rates starting at $2,990 pp.
