Living in Arizona has many perks, and one of them is being within driving distance of Sedona. One of the state’s most captivating destinations thanks to its dramatic red rock formations, evergreen foliage and energy vortexes, it’s a must for any traveler to the Southwest. We recently hit the road for a staycation in this amazing town, spending two nights at the newly reimagined SkyRock Sedona, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel.

Now, I do know the word “reimagined” has been a bit overused, so allow me to explain just why I chose it. What was once a run-of-the-mill motel with astounding views and a prime location is now, well, a tribute (use intended) to everything Sedona. The top-to-bottom redo of this property is remarkable and conveys an intense sense of place—truly embodying Marriott’s Tribute Portfolio’s positioning as “A family of independent boutique hotels bound by their indie spirit and heart for connecting people and places.” Here there’s character, there’s mindfulness, there’s community…all paired with Marriott’s signature comfort, attention to detail and hospitality.

The hotel is located on a bluff overlooking 89A, Sedona’s main thoroughfare and a very busy one at that. Happily, SkyRock is far enough from Uptown to be free from the hubbub and traffic. Want to join the crowds? The hotel’s free shuttle will take you to local shops and restaurants within a 3-mile radius, so problem solved. For me, its location practically across the street from Airport Mesa was ideal. You’ll still need to drive a bit up the hill to the trailhead, but the fairly easy hike with the accompanying jaw-dropping view is well worth it. Of note: It doesn’t really matter whether your clients are avid hikers or not to enjoy the outdoors. Sedona has trails apt for just about anyone, and the concierge at SkyRock, Sabiha, will cue your clients in on where to go and what to do, whether they’re hunting for vortexes, want to fly fish or are looking for jeep, hot air balloon or helicopter tours.

A little about the property itself. The main building is three stories tall with 109 guestrooms, but it’s set into the hill in a way that takes full advantage of the stunning view of Thunder Mountain, Snoopy Rock and other adjacent marvels. We parked right by the lobby entrance (more on the lobby below), which is technically on the third floor, checked in and walked around the corner to our King Room with Fireplace. Sleekly minimalist with handmade touches, every amenity and locally inspired artwork, our room was very comfortable, and we lacked for nothing.

Both the third and second floors have rooms that open to expansive shared patios with cozy sofas, fire-pits and tables. It was pretty warm when we visited, so we didn’t get to enjoy s’mores by said fire-pits (or our fireplace, for that matter), but it just means we’ll have to come back. If it was spectacular in the summer, I can’t imagine what it would be like in the fall and winter. We recommend booking the third floor because it’s also home to the Bar WooWoo, which serves artsy cocktails and highbrow bites (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) with a side of live music and gorgeous sunsets.

While SkyRock doesn’t have a spa, it does have an outdoor (heated) pool and hot tub, plus daily yoga classes, meditation, moonrise ceremonies (with a cocktail taster), stargazing (this is a Dark City), monthly full moon sound baths and more. In fact, the entire hotel is centered upon the very Sedona vibe of well-being, mindfulness and soothing energy. That also extends to pets because even though we didn’t bring one to try it out, they have a resident pet psychic. Plus, the hotel is kid-friendly for those who want to bring their littles to experience the magic.

Speaking of magic, let’s get back to that lobby. One of its most outstanding features is an entire wall of amethyst crystals behind the check-in counter—talk about focusing energy. It has other quirky pieces (like a wooden chair in the shape of a hand), velvet furnishings and artsy touches, which is also very “Sedona.” A cute note: At check-in, you’re shown a bowl of polished stones with different words etched into them (Beauty, Love, Peace, Surrender, etc.) and gifted the one that “speaks” to you the most.

With its small size, easy-to-navigate footprint and endless options for Sedona-specific experiences, SkyRock Sedona is also ideal for takeovers—think retreats, weddings and even incentive trips. And for us Arizonans, it’s the perfect weekend escape to reconnect with nature—and ourselves.
