3. El Capitan

Joie de Vivre Hotels will debut a new, 114-room boutique hotel in downtown Merced, California, opening in late 2019: El Capitan. Located in Northern California’s San Joaquin Valley, El Capitan will be housed in the former 19th century historic hotel of the same name. The 4-story hotel will feature both a historically-preserved wing and a newly-constructed extension, with a courtyard overlooking M Street in the heart of Merced. The hotel’s original, iconic signage will be preserved, and materials such as terracotta flooring, beadboard wall paneling, and heritage-style lighting will be used to recall the site’s historic past. Art deco and Spanish Revival influences will also be found throughout the property, as well as architectural elements inspired by a 19th century train depot, underscoring the history of Merced as a transportation hub.

Of the 114 guestrooms, travelers can expect to find three 1-bedroom suites and nine junior suites. The property will also feature and all-day cafe and restaurant.
